Marie Kondo

The KonMari Method is a Japanese decluttering and organizing technique created by Marie Kondo. This unique approach encourages us to evaluate all of our belongings using only one criterion for deciding what to keep or discard—Does this item spark joy?

The KonMari Method begins with discarding and only after finishing that step thoroughly organizing, completing both “all in one go,” in a process known as tidying up.

Rather than tidying by room, location or a set time each day, processes that often result in incomplete action, distraction, and failure, organizing is done by category. The categories are arranged in order of increasing difficulty—clothing, books, paper, komono (miscellaneous), and sentimental items.

During the tidying process you’ll reassess habits and preconceived notions held about how to get and stay organized. Putting your house in order results in a mind set shift resulting in lasting change to conquer clutter once and for all. As a result you’ll likely naturally start to put other aspects of your life in order. Marie calls this transformation “life-changing magic.”

Marie Kondo began certifying consultants in her method outside of Japan in 2016.
